likeには様々な意味と使い方があります。『The Japan Times Alpha』の『Ian先生のやさしい Grammar Lesson』というコラムから、紹介したいと思います。

基本的な使い方

動詞では「〜が好き」ですが、前置詞や接尾辞、接続詞で使われると「〜のような」の意味になります。

The virus caused many flu-like symptoms.
He may seem very childlike and innocent, but actually he is quite sneaky.

接続詞
I want to play the piano well like my father does.
Like my mother always told me, it’s important to take care of your health.
You shouldn’t talk to your boss like you talk to your friends.
口語（Spoken English）

口語でのlikeの使い方です。カジュアルな表現なので、TPOをわきまえて使いましょう。

- 具体的な数字がわからない

何を言おうか考えている
likeの前後にポーズ「…」ができる。
I’m going to … like … call you next week.
It’s hard to describe, but the view was … like … it was breathtaking.
Well, I … like… umm … don’t really remember.

情報を強調する
The ticket cost me, like, $500!
She is, like, the nicest person I have ever met.
I waited in line for like, seven hours.
ソフトにお願い、尋ねる
Could I, like, borrow ¥500?
Would you be able to, like, help me clean up this room?
Do you want to, like, see a movie or something tonight?
具体的な数字がわからない
I think the admission fee is like ¥1,000.
He said he would call back at like 5 p.m. or so.
My nephew is like 4 or 5 years old.
